International tourism explodes. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has registered some 670millions arrivals (1) of tourists in the world in 1999, 57% increase in ten years. Low oil prices, development of air transport, less time spent at work, raising standards of living in the North, many factors contribute to this trend. And its economic impact is considerable: 439milliards dollars in revenue in 1998.
The bulk of the tourist globalization occurs in developed countries: Africa accounts, for example, only 2% of world tourism receipts. With 70millions arrivals in 1998, France is the largest country of destination. Leaving aside China (25million), the first developing country, Thailand (7,7millions) appears only in global 21erang.
Tourism is nevertheless an important resource for the South: 63milliards dollars in 1997, according to the UNWTO. More than official development assistance ($ 50 billion in 1998, according to the OECD). The consequences are, however, difficult to master. Beyond the environmental effects (wild, degradation of natural environments urbanization), tourism often contributes to dislocate local companies, especially with the growth of prostitution. Furthermore, the increased mobility of tourists from North was coupled with increasingly stringent restrictions on the movement of people from the South to the North.
